02/11/2025 i love newspapers but not this one

i <3 local newspapers

Whatever may be the limitations which trammel inquiry elsewhere we believe the great state University of Wisconsin should ever encourage that continual and fearless sifting and winnowing by which alone the truth can be found.

One of my favorite pastimes is reading the newspaper. I love seeing a new edition of a local magazine, getting to read all about the local news and interesting writeups about events I never knew were happening. When I worked for the City of Minneapolis as a summer intern, I got the opportunity to drive around Minneapolis in the city car ( a feeling of power that has yet to be matched is the ability to turn on the blinkers and drive up the curb for official city business). With this freedom I would often stop by a coffee shop with the other interns, where by the door there usually would be a rack with the local neighborhood newspaper which I would always grab. My favorite were the Southside Pride and the Northeaster.

One of my favorite parts of these newspapers are the editorials, where random people can speak there mind about whatever they want. I love getting to see the world through someone elses eyes.

Despite being a pro nuclear fella, I think my favorite newspaper is Nukewatch Quarterly, a quarterly (obviously) paper only a couple pages long. I initially only picked it up to chuckle to myself about its misperceptions about nuclear. But inside I found very interesting articles about things I had never heard about before. The one that stuck in my mind was a report on transporting nuclear materials through indigenous reservations - an act that the reservations, after years of their land being treated as a dumping ground for various forms of hazardous waste, has banned. Despite this banning, the US Government and nuclear industry ignores it, and keeps doing it. Nowhere in my pro-nuclear newspapers had I read this, my daily nuclear news email blasts from the ANS had never mentioned it. Only by reading outside my political views had I found issues that I do care about.

After that I always take the opportunity to read whatever newspaper I can, especially if I don't think I'll agree with it. I've learned a lot through it. Until today, when I first red The Madison Federalist.

What is the joke? Is it gender? Is it that liberals talk about gender? Is it that people dance? Is it that fat people exist?

What sticks in my mind is the lack of curiosity this newspaper excudes. They have no interest in learning more about the class. They have no interest in learning more about the subject. They think that they know exactly what the class is based only on its course title and description, and jump immediatly to mockery. I hate this shit.

Next time you find yourself next to a newspaper rack at your local coffee shop or student union, I recomend taking the chance to pick one up and read it, even if you don't think youll like it. Just maybe not The Madison Federalist. Stay curious.
