games
I learned to make scratch games in my elementary school accelerated math class with Mr. Mark, still one of the best teachers I've ever had. We would learn to engineer using Lego Mindstorms NXT robots, practice math by playing Sumdog, and learn to code by making games in scratch. Here is a collection of games I have made since.
Bridge Building Simulator - June 2023
This follows the rise and fall of the original I-35W Mississippi River Bridge. It was created as a final project for my AP U.S. History class, after the test was over and we had a month to do whatever we really wanted. This would be the last final project I made for high school - my senior year, I opted to take all my classes at the local university (partially because it was free college and partially because I wouldn't have to see my now high school ex, owner of Thomas from my hit game Thomas on the Street).
Something I didn't really understand at the time was the scale of the I-35W bridge, and how often a Minneapolis resident crosses it. The summer after graduating high school I got a job with the City of Minneapolis as, for lack of a better title, a sewer inspector. I got a city car and would drive it with the other interns to inspect manholes and catchbasins to assess if they needed to be replaced with the upcoming road construction. We would drive over the I-35W bridge multiple times a day.
Hit and Run - March 2022
This was made as a final project for my sophomore year english class in high school. I believe the only requirements of the project were that it had to be a creative work that followed a theme. My theme was "Running away won’t solve your problems if there’s still something left to run from". This game features callbacks to the car in Thomas on the Street (a Volvo owned by one of my friends parents) and Dog Puppy from my famous line of pet sim games.
Thomas on the Street - January 2022
The protagonist of this game is Thomas, my high school girlfriends cat who had eyes that saw through you, like an aligator waiting to bite. In the spirit of this, I made a game where you had to fight off the impending doom of Thomas - although it should be noted, Thomas always wins.
It has been a long time since I have seen Thomas. I miss him.
Turtle Tantrum - March 2016
I'm sure that this is the first game I made on scratch, on the old macs in the computer lab where my math class was held, but it was uploaded onto my personal account later. We made this to learn about coordinates, as well as the transformations you could do with them. My partner for the project was Eli.
Dog Puppy 1 & 2 - Spring 2015
The Dog Puppy games were my take on the classic Scratch pet sim. I can still remember the feeling when I first got the features working, sitting at my tiny and shakey desk in my line green painted room (see me circa 2015). Both me and my cat Odin make an appearance.
The second installation in the saga comes with many more features, but still takes the opportunity to include Odin.
